About
At times we may experience loneliness, pain, anxiety, trauma, despair, isolation, loss, ‘stuck-ness’, or a lack of connection. Sometimes we suffer and cannot explain or reason why. The work we do together will focus on increasing self-awareness and we will pay attention to what happens between us, mindful that the therapeutic relationship itself may be a factor influencing change and offering valuable insight into relational patterns.
Shifts occur when we are listened to, feel safe and seen, and when questions are asked and in-the-moment experiences, apprehensions, and perceptions shared. It is my hope that our work together will help you going forward to feel a greater sense of ease and confidence in your mind, body and soul helping you to comfortably navigate the ever-changing world we live in. As we work, we may explore the impact of ancestral influences, hierarchies, and traumatic experiences, and the ways in which culture, race, society, and family have shaped your ‘sense of self’ and feelings of belonging. I would love to work alongside you untangling any troubles or issues; offering new insights as we carefully consider what matters most to you.
Experience has taught me that we can easily become disconnected with who we are and that therapy, when navigated honestly with kindness and a degree of challenge, in a safe and confidential environment, can help us to become who we have always been. This is not to say our systems won’t remain in a state of flux with our sense of self being frequently updated - this will happen - but if this can be encountered with something resembling clear-eyed consciousness, we seem to stand a better chance of thriving!
As an experienced yoga teacher, I often gently weave the principles of eastern philosophies, mindfulness and somatic experiencing into my counselling practice. I may encourage you, in our work together, to pay close attention to your felt/somatic experience, believing, as Bessel van der Kolk succinctly puts it, that “we cannot recover from some experiences until we become familiar with, and befriend the sensations in our bodies.”
My therapeutic approach utilises concepts, skills and techniques from a wide range of theories and teachings, drawing notably on ideas from Transactional Analysis, Gestalt Therapy, Systemic Therapy, neuroscience, and from Phenomenological Philosophy. That said, you need not know anything of the above, or be interested in yoga, for us to work together. Just bring your humanity and curiosity.
Alongside private practice, I work for the NHS in both a counselling and teaching role and enjoy embracing and synthesising the tensions that often emerge between science, philosophy, spirituality, and the medical model.
I draw inspiration for my work not only from psychological and counselling theories but also from novels, poetry and nature. I embrace description, metaphor, and imagination as I try to get to know you and understand your experience.
